COOL GIRL 101: Halloween Costume Building (part deux)

COOL GIRL 101: Halloween Costume Building (part deux)

By: KENDALL MILLER

Throughout the years, Halloween has progressed to become one of the best ways to showcase your creativity and style. Putting together a costume that is both unique and fashionable with just a touch of sexy can be a big stressor this time of year.  I mean how do we compete with the girls that haveTrashy Lingerie™ funds? Finding unique pieces and putting focus into your hair and makeup is a good (and cheaper) way we can stand with the scream queens.

THE FLINTSTONES: SHARON STONE

Emulating Sharon Stone, AKA Mr. Flintstone's ‘mistress’, is no easy feat. She is introduced in the people version of The Flintstones, by bringing drama, sex appeal, and flirty fashions into their world. With very little to work with (given the caveman time period) she managed to pull out stunning look after look throughout the film. For her costume, I chose to model it after the scene pictured above where she sports an amazing halter two-piece set, complete with statement pieces of stone jewelry. She also happens to pull off these looks while being barefoot the whole movie which I would say is a feat (no pun intended) in itself, for me shoes often make an outfit.

If you really want to commit to The Flintstones aesthetic, you can take references from Jeremy Scott’s S/S 2010 show pictured above. For this collection he took heavy inspiration from The Flintstones and created quite an exaggerated interpretation of the fashion and beauty depicted. Personally, I would go the more toned down route, focusing on defining sharper features found in cavemen in history, accentuating natural depth, and creating messier or ‘undone’ hairstyles as shown.

SEX AND THE CITY: CARRIE BRADSHAW

Ahh, Ms.Bradshaw. Where do I even begin? She has so many amazing looks to pull inspo from, not only for Halloween, but everyday life. Carrie Bradshaw is the ultimate IT girl of the 90’s and should be honored as such. As a fashion risk taker and trend setter throughout the show’s run, (with some credit to SJP and the real life Carrie - Candace Bushnell), there can be no true Carrie outfit without a mismatched shoe, an out of place garment, or bold accessory - never forget the pigeon clutch RIP. For my Halloween outfit, we had to go back to the beginning, the very beginning… of each episode that is. Highlighted in the title sequence, where the bus pictured above almost hits Carrie, this outfit consists of your everyday tutu and tank combo- obviously. Although it’s a surprisingly tame outfit of Carrie’s throughout the show’s run, I decided to make it a bit more wearable for the everyday girl. Replacing the tutu with a bubble skirt and adding a purse for the girls on the move, this costume is perfect for the fashion lover (and gives a good excuse to buy more clothes you can wear again ;)).

Now, Carrie never claimed to be a beauty girl. Throughout the show she can almost always be seen with a natural makeup look paired with pink lipstick and the occasional elaborate updo. So, for this costume there’s no need to stress yourself out trying to achieve a crazy makeup look, and that’s part of the beauty! And for those of you not blessed with a wild head of curls, you might get in a good arm workout with a skinny, mini barrel wand curler to achieve Carrie’s iconic c-c-curly hair. Happy curling!

ARISTOCATS: MARIE

Marie from the Aristocats is the perfect way to elevate the classic cat costume. With her elegant way of life and sassy demeanor you can have lots of fun dressing as her. She isn’t wearing any clothes in the movie except the bows, so what you wanna do is really up to you to interpret into your style! Below I tried to focus on her color scheme of white and pink, while also incorporating the bows she wears and the pearls she wishes she could. Layering pearl and gold jewelry can help to convey what character your costume is as well, so have fun with it!

For her hair and makeup this is again up to personal interpretation! One of the best ways to dress as an animal is to imagine what they might be like in human form. I imagine her to have big bouncy curls, similar to what you see in the VS Fashion Shows. Adding small bows to the hair or even a thin headband would be a chic way to add interest to your hairstyle as well. The base makeup should be a bit more on the glamorous side with a focus on the highlighter and pink lips. To finish it off, doing a sharp wing in addition to long lashes helps give the exaggerated cat eye look we want to mirror.

WIZARD OF OZ: GLINDA & THE WICKED WITCH

The movie of the year and it hasn’t even come out yet: Wicked. We all know the classic take on the witches of Oz and this year we get to enjoy a more modern retelling of the story. Although it comes out in November, this movie is definitely one of the most anticipated of the year so why not jump on the bandwagon before it takes off?  Glinda the Good Witch is defined by pink, glitter, and feminine touches. To emulate her look but make it a bit more modern, I chose pieces of pink satin and lace with contemporary silhouettes. Elphaba the Wicked Witch is recognized by the stark contrast of her all black outfits and chartreuse skin tone. Her outfit is a bit more simplistic, but I added the green top to get the point across while avoiding a body paint errand. I chose the bow heels for both of them to create a through-line for both outfits while also subtly conveying their similarities explored later in the film.

The hair and makeup seen in the Wizard of Oz and Wicked universe is usually on the more simplistic side of the spectrum. Glinda’s look in the movie is natural with pink undertones to create an overall lighter tone for her character. As expected, Elphaba is quite the opposite. With her dark wardrobe and bright green skin, her makeup and hair sort of falls by the wayside in the movie. However, if we are looking at the Wicked musical, after Elphaba’s makeover she sports a beautiful smokey eye and low pony (or bun depending on where you look). For a real life version, I think focusing on colorful eye makeup like the green and pink ones shown above paired with sleek hairstyles, can help to demonstrate the characters’ looks in a more chic way.

LAST MINUTE HALLOWEEN COSTUMES

Last but not least we have included some last minute ideas for the girls on the go who haven’t had the time to shop. There are so many different ways to achieve these looks, following them to a T isn’t necessary. However, if you’re in the Scottsdale/Phoenix area and looking for a place to shop, come shop at Spice Scottsdale. We have many clothing pieces that can be incorporated into costumes and for the month of October we have a custom tank top bar to create your own look (another cute way to do a lazy girls picnic costume)!
